Enough time to fish, wander into the wilderness, hear the local stories, and still do nothing for an afternoon.

Day 1 — Get on the water

2:00–6:00 pm

Settle in + the lake

Water play? Heads-up on water play: there is NO designated swim beach and no lifeguard — it's an open, busy motorized reservoir, and the water stays snowmelt-cold well into summer (ease in; cold-water shock is real). Stay near shore, mind boat lanes, and keep flotation on kids.

Take it easy Check in, then an easy afternoon: rent a kayak or SUP at the marina, or cast from the wheelchair-accessible fishing pier.
Standard Half-day on the water — a marina rental or your own boat.
Turn it up Full afternoon chasing kokanee, trout, or pike; buy your PRID permit + Colorado license first.

Standard Grill dinner, or cook in at the cabin with Country Market supplies.
Turn it up Grab-and-go from the Country Market and eat lakeside at sunset.

Day 2 — Into the high country

8:00 am–12:30 pm

A taste of the Weminuche

Take it easy A gentle lakeside or lower-trail walk and the Tour of Carvings.
Standard Lake Eileen #899 — 2.1 mi one-way, ~1,150 ft, aspen to a lily-pad lake with a reservoir overlook.
Turn it up Into the Weminuche (Colorado's largest wilderness) from the north-end trailheads — go early to beat afternoon storms. Vallecito Creek #529 runs ~10.5 mi / ~3,340 ft (mind the Oct 2025 washout). Distances + trailheads on the trail guide.

Vallecito's stories

Take it easy Walk the carvings and read the valley's history: the 2002 Missionary Ridge fire + the Alan Wyatt memorial, the October 2025 flood, the gold camp at Tuckerville — all on the Stories hub.

Turn it up Pair a story with its ground — e.g., the flood, then the creek it reshaped.

🌧️ This IS the rainy-day plan — most of it reads from a screen or a dry car.
💡 The natural low-key close, and the built-in bad-weather day.
🐾 Dogs at Vallecito: Leashed (6 ft) in campgrounds and developed sites (36 CFR 261.16); under control — really leashed — on trails and in the Weminuche. This is moose and bear country and unleashed dogs are the #1 trigger for moose charges. Old Timers day-use (east shore) is an easy leashed lakeside break.
