Vallecito in winter

What is open when the crowds leave, checked with the owners themselves and updated whenever they answer.

Most of the lake runs on a summer clock, and plenty closes for the season. Here's the straight answer on what's open, what's not, and what to check — so a winter trip is a good idea instead of a cold surprise.

Ice fishing

When the ice sets up, anglers fish Vallecito through the winter, and the VCSA ice-fishing tournament runs in February — the biggest cold-season event on the lake (details). Guided hard-water trips are available through Fisher Guide Service, (970) 769-0669. You still need a Colorado fishing license and a PRID permit (permits). Never trust lake ice without local confirmation — we don't report ice thickness.

Nordic skiing & snow travel

The Vallecito Nordic Club grooms about 15 km (~9 miles) of cross-country trails off FR 603, below the Old Timers day-use area (a PRID land-use fee applies). Snowshoe anywhere the snow is good, and snowmobiles run the USFS roads. Winter recreation

The quiet half of the year

This is Vallecito with the volume down — snow in the pines, and some mornings yours are the first tracks on the Nordic grid. Winter tires, a full tank, and a plan — that's the cost of having the lake to yourself. Plan the day with the winter-day itinerary, and read up on winter access before you drive up.

Winter conditions change daily — check live conditions, the forecast, and road status before you leave.
