A winter day at the lake

Groomed tracks, a line through the ice, and a valley that's mostly yours until spring.

How this works: pick a day, then tune each stop — tap a chip to spotlight the blocks and tracks that fit your crew (with little kids, flat & easy, big miles, dog-friendly, a group of 8+, or a rainy day). Choices save and are shareable.

The day

8:30–11:30 am

Tracks in the snow

Take it easy Snowshoe wherever the snow's good, or ski the flat. The Vallecito Nordic Club grooms about 15 km (~9 mi) off FR 603, below the Old Timers day-use area (a PRID land-use fee applies).
Standard A real Nordic day on the groomed network.
Turn it up Big Nordic miles, or head out on the USFS roads by snowmobile. Dress for altitude; pack out everything. Route is yours — start at the FR 603 grooming below Old Timers.
📍 restroom: owner-confirm · bench/seating: owner-confirm · shade: n/a (winter)
🐾 Leashed and under control; some grooming asks dogs stay off classic tracks — confirm locally.
🌧️ Storm/whiteout: stay low, or make it a Country Market + reading day.
💡 CR 501 is plowed (Level 1) but ices before the highway — check road status first.
11:30 am–1:30 pm

Midday warm-up + reset

Take it easy Warm up and refuel — the Country Market is open year-round for a hot kitchen, food, and supplies (Mon 7–7, Thu–Sat 7–7, Sun 7–3, closed Tue–Wed).
Standard Lunch in, then back out for the afternoon bite.
Turn it up Quick refuel; back on the ice or the tracks.
📍 restroom: at the Market · bench/seating: owner-confirm · shade: n/a
💡 Winter hours vary widely — call ahead.
1:30–4:30 pm

Ice fishing

Take it easy New to hard water? Go with a pro — Fisher Guide Service runs guided ice-fishing trips, (970) 769-0669. You'll still need a Colorado license + PRID permit.
Standard Set up your own spread when the ice is safe.
Turn it up Time the trip to the VCSA ice-fishing tournament in February — the biggest winter event on the lake.
📍 restroom: owner-confirm · bench/seating: n/a · shade: n/a
🐾 Keep dogs off unverified ice.
🌧️ No safe ice / bad weather: the winter hub lists what's open.
💡 Never trust lake ice without local confirmation — we don't report thickness.
🐾 Dogs at Vallecito: Leashed (6 ft) in campgrounds and developed sites (36 CFR 261.16); under control — really leashed — on trails and in the Weminuche. This is moose and bear country and unleashed dogs are the #1 trigger for moose charges. Old Timers day-use (east shore) is an easy leashed lakeside break.
